Everything You Need to Know About OpenAddresses: The Global Address Dataset
OpenAddresses is a free dataset of millions of physical and postal addresses around the world. We appended Placekeys to this dataset to make it easier to join with other datasets. Use this page to learn more and download the dataset.
OpenAddresses is a collaborative project aimed at collecting and providing open address data (postal and street addresses) from around the world. The project was founded in 2013 by Ian Dees and Nick Ingalls. They created OpenAddresses to fill the need for accessible, standardized, and open address data, which is crucial for a wide range of applications such as geocoding, mapping, and data analysis. The project is maintained by a community of volunteers, contributors, and companies like Mapbox (and formerly Mapzen), who gather, clean, and publish address data from various sources.
People often confuse the name “OpenAddresses” with “OpenAddress” but the correct name is “OpenAddresses.

The value of OpenAddresses lies in its quality and accessibility. By providing standardized address data that is free to use, the project supports innovation and development across multiple sectors. The ability to parse and import this data into databases, use it for geocoding, and integrate it into various mapping applications underscores its versatility and importance as a resource.
For more detailed information, you can visit the OpenAddresses website, explore the project on GitHub, or read about it on the OpenStreetMap wiki.
OpenAddresses data can be easily appended with a Placekey (a open matching service for physical places). Once the OpenAddresses data is appended with a Placekey, it can be easily joined with any other dataset that has a postal address or physical address.
